Frequently asked questions
What services do you provide?
How much does your wax removal service cost?
Is it cheaper if I only need one ear cleaned?
Our price is the same no matter how many ears we clean. In other words, if we clean 1 ear or 2 ears, the price is the same.
How do I qualify for a Concession rate?
We consider you Concession if you (or the person you are booking for) has a pension card, low income health care card, DVA card or is a child 12 years or older. Children under 12 years old generally require a longer more patient consultation.
Will I still have to pay full price if I come to my appointment and no wax is found?
Unfortunately yes. If you are not sure you have wax please get it checked elsewhere first. We are a very popular hearing clinic and if you book an appointment you are acknowledging and understand that you are taking up another patient's spot even if you may not have wax present. If no wax is present (or only a small amount) AND you still feel blocked, we usually perform other tests to determine/eliminate likely ear related problems.
Is this a rebatable service?
Health insurance providers should offer a rebate if you are covered for Audiological Consultations (no guarantee). You will need to check with them first. This is only a medicare rebatable service if you have been referred by your GP as part of a GP Management Plan for a chronic health condition.
Do I need a referral from my GP or Audiologist?
No referral is required. Where this service has been provided on the mainland for the last 10 years, GPs and Audiologists have routinely referred patients to micro-suction wax removal specialists. If a referral is provided however, the patient will receive a reduced rate to our service (see above question for more information). Referral can be via fax to 03 8080 1016 or email info@earsuctionclinic.com.au
What happens if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?
We at Ear Suction Clinic understand that at times, one may need to reschedule or cancel an appointment. All that we ask is that you provide us with at least 24 hours notice by emailing info@earsuctionclinic.com.au or calling 1300 380 060. If less than 24 hours notices is given, Ear Suction Clinic may charge a 50% fee. If no notice is given at all and you do not attend your appointment, Ear Suction Clinic holds the right to charge you in full for the service you missed.
How long does the appointment last?
Generally, an appointment will go from anywhere between 15-30 minutes depending on the severity of the wax. If it is your first appointment, please allow for at least 30 minutes in duration for your appointment.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
We at Ear Suction Clinic believe the best softening agent around is chemist grade olive oil. We recommend you apply a few drops to each ear every night for the few days leading up to the appointment. Put some cotton wool in your ear to stop the oil from leaking out onto your pillow.
Do I need my ears cleaned?
Chances are that if you happened upon our service, either you already know or someone has told you that you have excessive wax in your ears. For the majority of people, our ears are amazing at self-cleaning and pushing out the wax they produce all by themselves. However, it is also very common for this self-cleansing mechanism of the ear not to work as efficiently from time to time. People with narrow ear canals, hairy ear canals, windy ear canals or those who wear things in their ears like hearing aids are more prone to excessive wax build up. If you are unsure, ask your GP or Audiologist next time you see them to have a look in your ears. If there is wax, you can request that they email or fax us a referral for a reduction in the cost for our service.
What are the symptoms of wax build-up?
How often should I have my ears cleaned?
Everyone is different and produces wax in different amounts over different time-frames. To maintain good aural health, a 12 monthly appointment would be sufficient for the majority of people just like an annual dentist appointent. If you produce wax more quickly, than a more regular check-up would be warranted. An individualised aural health care plan will be provided at the conclusion of each appointment and modified as the need arises.
Why is it so important for me to have clean ears?
Having clean ears is very important to maintaining good aural health. Good aural health reduces the adverse health risks associated with excessive wax build-up namely: outer ear infections (bacterial or fungal), cholesteatoma, annoying tinnitus which may have a psychosocial impact, ear drum perforations and mastoiditis to name a few. Just like we go to the dentist once a year (or least try to) to prevent problems associated with poor oral health, getting our ears checked and cleaned often can help prevent the aforementioned problems.
Does wax removal using micro-suction hurt?
No. This procedure is generally painless. However, there may be some minor discomfort for people who present with severe impacted wax. Before every appointment, applying olive oil in the few days leading up to it will greatly reduce the chance of you experiencing this minor discomfort. At Ear Suction Clinic, we also use olive oil during the appointment as a softening agent and are trained at removing wax with minimal discomfort. Should you have any concern during the procedure, it will be stopped immediately. Most people find instantaneous relief from their wax symptoms as soon as it is removed with the micro-suction method.
Is micro-suction safe?
Micro-suction and curette technology is the safest method to remove wax and is why it is the preferred option used by Ear, Noise and Throat Specialists (ENTs). It is especially ideal for patients who:
For what ages is this procedure appropriate?
We can see patients of all ages including young children. However, in order to be successful, the patient needs to be able to sit still. We will stop and start the procedure frequently to make it easier for a restless child and may even play a DVD for them.

How much does your wax removal service cost?
- Our standard rate is $130-$150 depending on whether you are seen by our Specialist Registered Nurses or Clinical Audiologist ($20 off with a standard GP/Audiologist referral or $56 off (with medicare rebate applied) if referred by a GP for a chronic health condition and Audiology has been included as part of the overall GP Management Plan)
- Patients with a Concession card will be charged $110-$120 ($20 off with a standard GP/Audiologist referral or $56 off (with medicare rebate applied) if referred by a GP for a chronic health condition and Audiology has been included as part of the overall GP Management Plan). This includes children 12 years old and over until 18 years old.
- Children under the age of 12 will be charged $150 ($20 off with a standard GP/Audiologist referral or $56 off (with medicare rebate applied) if referred by a GP for a chronic health condition and Audiology has been included as part of the overall GP Management Plan).
- If no wax is found, our appointment fee still applies. If you are not sure you have wax we recommend you get it checked elsewhere first to reduce the chance of disappointment.
- Generally children cope with our procedure quite well. Sometimes however, very young children may move around too much rendering the procedure unsafe to continue. If this happens unfortunately the appointment fee still applies. If you are not confident your child will be able to sit through the procedure, we recommend your GP refers them to an ENT where the procedure can be performed under sedation.
- In some situations if you are a Pensioner or DVA Gold or DVA White (hearing specific) card holder, we will provide our legendary microsuction earwax removal service for $60-$70 (conditions apply - call to find out if this applies to you).
- Otherwise, for DVA Gold or DVA White (hearing specific) card holders, your appointment can be fully subsidised by DVA. A referral letter from your GP stating why syringing should not be performed is required. Prior approval from DVA is needed before your appointment proceeds. If you cannot wait, please refer to the above prices.
- Nursing home visits - our clinicians can arrange to come to see a patient in a nursing home. A flat rate of $350 applies. Call 1300 380 060 to arrange an appointment.
- Our price is the same no matter how many ears we clean. In other words, if we clean 1 ear or 2 ears, the price is the same.
On rare occasions, deep impacted wax may not be able to be removed in a single visit ( especially if no softening agent like olive oil has been used in the preceding days). In this case, a subsequent appointment will be needed and olive oil required to be used in the intervening days. The subsequent appointment will not incur a charge.
