Micro-suction Earwax Removal - How does it work?
Microsuction Ear Wax Removal should be administered by a fully trained practitioner. The steps below are all designed to ensure your ear wax removal experience is both pleasant and thorough. We are aware that some practitioners out there just use microsuction without any in appointment preparatory procedures like softening of the wax with currettage (just to name a few). For some wax this may be ok but for the majority of people who only just get microsuction done, they will not have their ears fully rid of wax and debris. This is what sets Ear Suction Clinic apart. We take pride in our ability to remove every last vestige of wax from our patients ears and their happy experience and smiles of delight speak volumes for our results. Don't just give your ears to anyone. At Ear Suction Clinic, Feel the Relief, Hear the Relief.
Nursing Home VisitsEar Suction Clinic routinely visit patients at nursing homes when it is physically impractical for the patient to come to our clinic. If you would like to arrange a Nursing Home Visit for a loved one, please call 1300 380 060. A call out rate applies.

STEP 1: Medical and Aural Health History
When you are escorted in for your appointment, you will be asked to sit on a luxurious and comfortable motorised chair that can be adjusted to ensure the best height and position is used throughout the procedure. A trained Ear Suctioneer (clinician - audiologist) will start the appointment by going through with you a pre-appointment medical form to identify relevant ear health or medical conditions they need to be aware of before the procedure commences.

STEP 2: Observation
When it has been ascertained that there are no contra-indications to administering the wax removal procedure, the clinician will conduct a thorough observation of your ear canal with binocular glasses and by placing a speculum into your ear. The speculum is used to help focus the clinicians vision on the tiny space that is your ear canal. From this observation, the clinician will identify the most efficient and effective way to remove the wax.
From this point on throughout the wax removal procedure, you will need to keep your head relatively stable. Don't worry, the clinician will provide you with regular breaks throughout as you need them.

STEP 3: Softening the Ear Wax
The next stage in the procedure often requires the use of some sort of softening agent to help loosen the ear wax from the ear canal walls. At Ear Suction Clinic, we prefer to use just everyday olive oil as we believe this is the most effective as well as being hypo-allergenic and nourishing for the very sensitive skin of the ear canal. We use pharmacy olive oil in our clinic. For very sticky ear wax, we would apply a combination of peroxide and olive oil instead. The clinician will apply this softening agent by using tiny spoons with soft cotton wool under microscopic observation.
Before your appointment to help with the softening process, you would have been asked to use a few drops of olive oil in each ear for a few days leading up to it.

STEP 4: Ear Wax Removal using Microsuction Technology
This next step involves the clinician using the tiny spoon to push softened ear wax away from the ear canal walls to the centre. They will then use a gentle suction straw attached to a low-pressurised suctioning machine to extract the ear wax. Throughout the process, the clinician has full control of what they are doing and can always see where the remaining wax is located in order to position the suction straw appropriately.

STEP 4a: Ear Wax Removal using other techniques
Occasionally, your clinician may need to use micro-forceps to gently remove any stubborn wax that the previous step using micro-suction was unable to budge.

STEP 5: Individualised Aural Care Plan
When your ears are finally clear of wax, your clinician will discuss with you how to best care for your ears in terms of wax management, ear infections, Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and how often you should come to have your ears cleaned (or monitored). Aural Health information sheets specific to your needs will be provided together with a small complementary bottle of olive oil for you to use as instructed by your clinician.
